Donald Edgar Morey passed away on Sunday, September 19, 2021, at HealthSource Saginaw, at the age of 88 years. Don was born on July 2, 1933, in Saginaw, Michigan to the late Ernest C. and Gertrude (Hare) Morey. He attended Saginaw schools and graduated from Arthur Hill High School in 1951. Don married Roberta M. Krenz on March 30, 1958. She survives him. He attended Michigan State University and received B.A. and M.A. degrees. He also received 60 additional credits from Central Michigan University.

Don served his country in the United States Army, during the Korean War, from 1954 to 1956. He was employed as a teacher and coach at Bay City Central High School from 1958 to 1961. He then came to Saginaw in 1961, and was employed at Arthur Hill High School as a teacher and swim coach until his retirement in June 1993. Don was involved in athletics his entire life, winning many honors. He was inducted into the Arthur Hill Athletic Hall of Fame and the Saginaw Swimming Hall of Fame. He was a lifetime member of the Michigan State University Varsity Club. He was a past President of both the Arthur Hill Letterwinner’s Association and the Saginaw Swimming Official’s Association. He was a member of the Michigan Sports Sages, life member and charter member of the Board of Directors of the Saginaw County Sports Hall of Fame. He was also a life member of the Bay County Sports Hall of Fame. In 2011, he was awarded the Heusner Swimming and Diving Award at Michigan State University. His memberships in other community organizations included the Germania Towne and Country Club, where he served as President in 1980, he also was President of its Golf Association, served on the Board of Directors of the Arthur Hill Alumni Fund and was instrumental in the organization and printing of three Arthur Hill Alumni Directories. He was a member of American Legion Post #439, and a former member of the Fordney Club. He was a charter member of Resurrection Lutheran Church, where he served on its first church council as treasurer.

Surviving besides his wife Roberta are his daughter, Sara (Robert) Taylor of Kewadin, MI; his two sons John (Cynthia) Morey of Saginaw, MI; and Andrew Morey of Saginaw, MI; his grandchildren include, Jacqueline (Wesley) Landon, Spencer Taylor, Cassidy (Andrew) Price, Lara (Matt) Morgrette and Morgan Morey; his two great-grandchildren are Henry Landon and Elizabeth Landon. He is also survived by three sisters and one brother, Sharon (John) Bartle of Hale, MI, Jean (Michael) Dunkley of Louisville, KY, Jane (Ken) Miner of Saginaw, MI, and Clayton (Linda) Morey of Casa Grande, AZ, also several nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family members and dear friends. Don was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Robert in 1989.

Don’s funeral service will take place 11:00 a.m. on Wednesday, September 22, 2021, at Wakeman Funeral Home, 1218 N. Michigan Ave., Saginaw, MI. Rev. Kathleen Basner will officiate. Friends are welcome to visit with the family at Wakeman Funeral Home on Tuesday, September 21, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., then on Wednesday from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service. Per Don’s wishes, cremation will follow. Don will then be laid to rest in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Saginaw Twp., MI, with full Military Honors conducted by the United States Army and American Legion Post #439 at 1:00 p.m. on Wednesday, October 6, 2021. Those planning an expression of sympathy could consider Resurrection Lutheran Church, the Castle Museum of Saginaw County History or Hawkins Award Scholarship @ Saginaw Community Foundation.
