1922 - 2021

Donna Cappell-Smith, Age 98, of Alma, formerly of Saginaw, passed away Sunday, February 14, 2021. She was born June 25, 1922, in Saginaw, the daughter of George W. and Audra E. (Decker) Francis. She lived most of her life in Saginaw before moving to Masonic Pathways in 2015. Donna was a graduate of Arthur Hill High School and earn her teaching degree from Alma College in 1943. Donna married George W. Cappell on April 12, 1943, a blessed union of 56 years. Donna later married Henry S. Smith on June 12, 2002. 

Donna taught for over 25 years at Arthur Hill High School before her retirement in 1982. She was an active member of First Presbyterian Church in Saginaw, serving as a deacon and elder and working with their food pantry. She was also active with the Junior Reading Club, Zonta Club, Saginaw Garden Club and the Germania Town and Country Club. She served as a Brownie leader with the Mitten Bay Girl Scouts, was president of the Herig School PTA, and was a parent booster of Stars of Tomorrow Orchestra.

Donna is survived by her children, Michele "Micky" (John) Johnston, Sandra (James) Fogus, Daniel (Patricia) Cappell; 13 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; step-daughters, Audrey Lewis, Catherine Murphy; special cousin Eileen Pierson; and many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, George W. Cappell, second husband, Henry S. Smith; great-granddaughter, Abigail; brother, George W. Francis, Jr.; sisters-in-law, Donna Lee Francis and Phyllis Cappell; and brothers-in-law, John V. Cappell and Lincoln Cappell. Per Donna's wishes cremation has taken place with a memorial service to be held at a later date. Interment will be held in Roselawn Memorial Gardens, Saginaw. Those desiring, may make memorial contributions in Donna's memory to First Presbyterian Church-Food Pantry or the activities department at Masoinc Pathways.
